BASS RIVER MOSQUITO SAMPLE TESTS POSITIVE FOR EASTERN EQUINE ENCEPHLITIS
Eastern Equine Encephalitis, a mosquito-borne illness typically deadly to horses, was found in a sample taken in Bass River at a private residence. The virus, which causes inflammation of the brain, primarily affects horses and is preventable by vaccinations. County officials are asking horse owners to contact their veterinarians to check on the status of their horses’ EEE and West Nile vaccinations.
For more information about the EEE and West Nile viruses in horses, visit the New Jersey Department of Agriculture‘s website at www.nj.gov/agriculture.
